Immanuel Kant, the Enlightenment, and the Old Testament

Image
There was a period in certain parts of Europe called (with a passel of hubris in the eyes of this child) the Age of Reason  or the Enlightenment . These things do not simply spring up on their own, but are developed from religious, cultural, intellectual, political, and other cultural views that happened before. The Enlightenment was by no means unified. Some had a fondness for Classical things (Socrates himself was particularly missed by Voltaire). Some wanted knowledge without the senses, others believed knowledge could be achieved by reason alone. This period is sometimes considered a triumph of atheism (indeed, the bloody French Revolution was the culmination). Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles, was an atheist who lived at this time. His Zoonomia  was unfluential to Charlie . Immanuel Kant by Johann Gottlieb Becker, 1768, modified with PhotoFunia Criticism of the Bible was widespread at this time with efforts to find excuses to intellectualize it away. (For that...

Neanderthals not so Mysterious After All

Image
In the parade of our alleged evolutionary ancestors, Neanderthals were iconic. They were portrayed as brutish cave dwellers. After much time and further investigations, this image was shown to be completely wrong. Living in caves...sure, why not? People have done that through history, and even do so today. It seems that the mystery deepened for anthropologists and paleontologists. To them, Neanderthals could be the Cotton-Eyed Joes: Where did they come from, and where did they go? From a biblical creationist perspective using scientific discoveries, they are not so enigmatic after all. Neanderthal Woman, PLOS One / WikiComm /  Bacon CPH  (now deleted) ( CC BY 2.5 ), Modified at PhotoFunia It has been demonstrated that Neanderthals had all sorts of human traits but nothing to show simian ancestry. Most evolutionists have reclassified them as fully human, even though there are still some holdouts (because Darwin needs the narrative). Reconstructions show that they clean up ...

Upgrading Ourselves with Transhumanism

Image
Replacing limbs and such that are the results of birth defects or injuries goes back centuries. The image of a pirate with a pegleg comes to mind. It was a budget prothesis. There are countless other applications throughout history. Advanced forms of prosthesis are from the field of bionics . They are medical biological electronics, popularized by Martin Caidin in his Cyborg  novels and The Six Million Dollar Man television shows. (That much money would only be a down payment today.) Bionic limbs use existing nerves and muscles to operate. Some bionics can even involve robotics and artificial intelligence. Bionic eye, Pixabay / intographics Bionics are used in many ways, and people may not associate their implants and such with that word. What about taking it further? While there's no defying God's creation by mitigating damag caused through defects and mutations (originating in the Fall of Man), some folks with a worldview rooted in naturalism want to help evolution along thro...

Stonehenge and the Biblical Timeframe

Image
One of the most remarkable and recognizable places in the world is Stonehenge, bringing along a sense of mystery. There are numerous candidates for the original builders and their reasons for doing so, but those are only speculations. Why was it built? Perhaps it is because it is on one of the alleged ley lines . Some people think it may have been a temple or healing center , possibly because of the unique bluestones (spotted dolomite) that were transported from Wales to the Stonehenge site. It has been determined that it was set up to be a perpetual calendar. Stonehenge, Pixabay / Simons41 While Stonehenge was known to have astronomical aspects, it took many years to determine that its structure shows mathematical precision. The ancient builders knew that there would need to be adjustments made for leap years as well. (Remnants of the  Cahokia Woodhenge were discovered in the 1960s. Although less ancient, its builders apparently made it to be a solar calendar as well. It doesn't ...

Pristine Wilderness is a Myth?

Image
As people are celebrating Lenin's birthday , which is also Earth Day, they are advocating for the ethical treatment of animals , taking care of the environment, and other decent things. Keep an eye on the radicals who hijack noble efforts for their own ends. There is talk of "pristine wilderness." What does that really mean? Uncorrupted by civilization, some might say. Others would say that it means untouched by humans. When evolutionary thinking is added to the mix, things get...truly bizarre. Amazon Rainforest, Flickr /  Ivan Mlinaric  ( CC BY 2.0 ) There are people who think that humans taint everything, and the world would be better off if there was no technology, medical science, society, or anything else. Humans have influenced pretty much everything, even areas that are considered pristine, for millennia. Strangely, these extremists are inconsistent with their evolutionary ideas: Since we all allegedly evolved from a common ancestor and evolved to the top of the he...

Understanding Special Creation

Image
by Cowboy Bob Sorensen  The title may prompt the reader to expect an article about the importance of creation science from both science and biblical standpoints, but that is not the case. For Question Evolution Day , it seemed like a good idea to go back to one of the basics. I did not practice what I preach on getting a definition nailed down. This error illustrates how we can make assumptions about word meanings, then have confusion if people do not have a meeting of the minds on terminology. Sunrise , Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, 1904 Regular readers have known this child to emphasize how we must be careful in discussions to make sure all parties understand what is being discussed. Otherwise, there can be arguments, then shootouts in the saloon which startle the horses outside. Okay, I mean that confusion can also lead to anger. The word evolution  has several meanings, and Darwinists often conflate change, variation, speciation , and other things with particles-to-pa...

Creation, the Fall, the Curse

Image
As stated before, there are many models in creation science that come and go, but the foundation is the inerrant Word of God. Biblical creationists attempt to square their ideas with Scripture and science. They reason from the Bible, and one consideration is the condition of creation at the beginning. There are differing speculations among creationists about the meaning of biblical texts regarding the state of creation. It was perfect, but some people read some idealism into it that was borrowed from the Greeks and not supported by the text. Pixnio / Drazen Nesic Some even think that there was no entropy before the Fall of Man and the Curse, but that idea does not fit with science or Scripture . Indeed, the Second Law of Thermodynamics had to be  in effect at the beginning for creation to even function . The Bible clearly indicates that the Fall and the Curse had definite physical effects on creation, and biblical creationists can study further on this. In the metanarrative of Scri...

Nimrod: Hunter and Tyrant

Image
Centuries ago, someone in my workplace was coaxing the assistant manager to insult the crew. "Tell them what they are." "A bunch of nimrods !" "Uh, what's a nimrod?" Apparently you  are, Poindexter. Nimrod painting by David Scott, 1832, modified at PhotoFunia Nimrod, capitalized, was a "mighty hunter before the Lord" (Gen. 10:9), We will deal with serious matters soon. First how the name became an insult instead of a complement to a hunter has a murky history. Some say that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck described Elmer Fudd, the mighty wabbit hunter, with " What a nimrod! " It was apparently sarcastic, and more modern phrasing might render it, "A nimrod. Not." The cartoons seemed to increase the popularity of nimrod denoting a stupid person, and many people have no idea of the original meaning. Ironically, there is evidence that this was not his real name, but rather, a  dysphemism  (using a disparaging word rather than the r...

Chilling Secular Ice Age Theories

Image
When secularists ridicule biblical creation science Ice Age models, you may get a variety of answers. That is, if they have anything other than, "Because atheism". Uniformitarian views require billions of years of gradual processes so Darwin's magic can happen, but they fail to explain observed evidence. Upsala glacier photographed from the International Space Station, Image credit:  NASA (Usage does not imply endorsement of site contents) In fact, the idea of an ice age was resisted by secularists for many years after it was first proposed. It was viewed as a threat to uniformitarianism, but they later incorporated it into their speculations because they couldn't ignore the evidence. However, they still have no idea how it happened; conjectures are conflicting and contrary to data. So, since they can't explain even one ice age, why not fifty? That's science. Use the fundamentally flawed Milankovitch Theory , because that's science, too. Never mind that bi...

The Work Ethic Begins in Genesis

Image
Many of us reluctantly get up and go to the workplace, then take satisfaction in a job well done. These days, some people have an entitlement mentality where they expect money for doing little or nothing at all. We were designed to do work. Credit: Wikimedia Commons / Fran Hogan  ( CC BY-SA 4.0 ) The work ethic is important in Western civilization. It was emphasized by the Protestant Reformers who noticed that it is a strong aspect of Christianity. Indeed, the value of work is all through the Bible and goes back to Genesis. Someone can be a construction worker, CEO, musician, ranch hand, stay-at-home mom, working with the developmentally disabled, author, or any of a myriad of professions. There's honor in that, especially when the worker seeks to glorify God. Paul urges Christians, “to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you” (1 Thessalonians 4:11). But the biblical mandate for work goes far deeper and further back than th...

Eating at the Table of Another

Image
We all probably know someone who is a taker but not a giver. They rely on the efforts of others, but are actually harmful to others. There is a word for someone or something that takes from another, essentially eating from the table of another. Credit: Flickr / NIH-NIAID  ( CC BY 2.0 ) You probably figured out that the subject under discussion is parasites . They come in many forms. Emotional vampires drain your essence (psychologically, not supernaturally); atheists claim to believe in science and reason, draw from foundational work of creationist scientists, then malign Christians and God; Democrats and socialists — but never mind about that now. Actually, we're here to discuss the much smaller kinds of parasites. While it is common knowledge that malaria is a disease caused by mosquitoes, but those parasites often carry a single-celled parasite themselves — and that is the thing that causes the disease. Biblical creationists believe what the Bible says, that in the beginning, e...

Viking DNA Dispersal Points to Babel

Image
It is easy to assume that the stereotypical Scandinavian today indicates how the Vikings of centuries past appeared. While it is known that the Vikings were explorers and reached North America long ago, there is other evidence of how much they got around. Credit: Flickr / Katherine (take a look at the caption for background) ( CC BY-ND 2.0 ) It seems to be human nature to move around, as we have seen with the Neanderthals, Denisovans, Celts, and other ancient people groups. Modern researchers raided Viking burial grounds and conductive intensive research, and saw that like other folks, they managed to spread their DNA around. However, they also discovered that DNA was shared into  Scandinavia. Trace genetics, culture, history, and so on back far enough and you'll find support for the biblical narrative of the dispersal at Babel. The activities of the Viking Age (793–1066 AD) radically shaped the demographic landscape of Europe—along with its politics, culture, and demographic...

Geology and the Doomed Cities of the Plain

Image
A post was made about how archaeology supports the Bible, and an atheopath said that it never has, never will. To be blunt, that is stupid as well as bigoted. Geology also supports the Bible. In fact, the cities of the plain in Genesis 19:29 KJV that God destroyed have apparently been located . Lot and his family leaving Sodom , Peter Paul Rubens, 1625 Sodom was a big place, and it had some smaller states around it. In fact, it was a nice place, and that's why Lot chose to live there when he parted from Abram (Genesis 13:8-12). When Lot was warned and forced to evacuate the exceptionally sinful area, they  fled to Zoar .  The Bible tells us about fire and brimstone that destroyed the area, and geological evidence has been found to support this. By the way, when Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, it wasn't just a quick glance over the shoulder. It would have been a case of lagging and longing. Remember, the angels compelled Lot and the others to leave. ...

Examining False Charges of Deluge Story Copying

Image
Hopefully, I can move to a replacement for this awful Google-owned Blogger platform by the end of the year. Like Facebook, they force changes on its users that are dreadful. Atheists and tinhorn "Christian scholars" level charges at the narrative of the Genesis Flood for being a copy of similar pagan stories. If so-called scholars actually did complete research instead of arguing from superficialities and anti-Bible presuppositions, they would not be making such foolish assertions. Library of Ashurbanipal / The Flood Tablet / The Gilgamesh Tablet / Wikimedia Commons / Fæ   ( CC BY-SA 3.0 ) As we know, there are global deluge story all over the world. Creationists believe that after the dispersal at Babel, the people took the historical account with them, but they deteriorated. One of the main problems with the idea of the Hebrews copying from pagan sources is that such a thing would be unthinkable to those Hebrews. The cultures of the ancient peoples in question were extremel...

When Genesis Flood Models Collide

Image
As stated before, scientists who ride for the biblical creation brand are like their counterparts in the secular science industry. Not only are they educated and credentialed, but are not always in lockstep when it comes to scientific models. Heavily modified from an image at Pixabay by Jeff Jacobs One major difference between the camps is that biblical creationists believe that the Bible is true, but models will come and go. Secularists have been dishonest for money and prestige. There are a few scientific models for the Genesis Flood among creationists, but the two best known are Catastrophic Plate Tectonics and the Hydroplate Theory . Some people passionately promote the Hydroplate Theory and consider it superior to Catastrophic Plate Tectonics. However, most creationists find serious flaws with it. If it is superior, then it would be the best of the worst — sort of like the nebular hypothesis  for the formation of the solar system is bad, but the others fail even more...

Extinctions of Mammoth Proportions

Image
Scientists are considering the relationship of extinctions between woolly mammoths and human groups. That may seem like a waste of time at first glance, but the genetic research has provided some interesting results regarding inbreeding  (or interbreeding, definition 2 ). This is especially significant in isolated populations. It seems that even though there were many woolly mammoths roaming the Northern Hemisphere, they mysteriously became extinct. After examining their DNA (no, don't be expecting cloned mammoths at the zoo), comparisons were made with human populations. Inbreeding is bad for offspring that may survive. "But Cowboy Bob, that's how the earth was populations back with Adam and Eve, then Noah and his family!" This is important, so let's take a ride on this here side trail for a spell. Biblical creationists believe that the Bible is true from the very first verse and also the part where God declared that everything was very good  (Gen. 1:...

Denying the Order of Creation

Image
by Cowboy Bob Sorensen There are certain elements in our lives that, try as some people may, still reflect what our Creator has designed us to know. When we say that something is morally right or wrong, we are appealing to a higher authority. This may be simply the law or cultural trends, but we ultimately appeal to God's laws. Men and women are made to be different and complement each other in marriage . Despite notions to the contrary, the truth that is inside us (Rom. 2:15-16) still affirms the order of creation. The Holy Family by Martin Schongauer, 1480 - 1490 Believers in universal common ancestor evolution are unable to cogently explain why sexual reproduction even exists. After all, it's a mite inefficient in an evolutionary worldview because asexual reproduction is better. The plan of our Creator was for marriage to be between one man and one woman. In an episode of The Briefing, Dr. Mohler was discussing articles about what is called homosexual "marria...

Examining the Created Kinds Concept

Image
A source of contention between biblical creationists and other biologists is the created kinds that we read about in Genesis. We are not given a great deal of information about what exactly they are, which prompts discussion among creationists as well. The study of biblical created kinds is called baraminology. Creationists believe that Basement Cat and lions developed from the original cat kind. The same with dogs, horses, and such. We are all from the same human kind. The system of taxonomy we use was devised by creationist Carolus Linnaeus , and scientists have made adjustments to it for many years. He was attempting to determine the created kinds in Genesis, and at first, thought that kinds were on the level of species. Biologists of the creation persuasion tend to think that kinds most closely line up with the classification of family, but there is some variation on that theme. Sometimes a creationist will say “there are no transitional species” or “animals do change, bu...

Genetics and the Creation of Eve

Image
Atheopaths and other mockers often point to the Genesis account of the creation of Adam and then Eve.This is in stark contrast to the fact-free fish-to-fool evolution that they falsely call science, yet still insist that we all accept. Adam and Eve before the Temptation / George Frederick Watts I'll allow that the creation of Adam from the dust of the earth and not evolving from critters is a mite startling to some folks. They would do well to consider that the Creator does things the way he sees fit, and there are purposes for his methods. Sometimes he tells us, other times we don't really need to know. The same sort of thinking can apply to the creation of Eve. God showed Adam the animals, but none of them would be suitable ×¢ֵ×–ֶר, helper. He was different from them. God essentially used the first anesthetic, and took a rib from Adam's side to make Eve. In a way, this was the first act of cloning by using genetic material. The science of genetics would not be pio...

Flat Earth Beliefs and Special Knowledge

Image
by Cowboy Bob Sorensen In my years of writing, doing social media, having conversations, and simply observing people, I have come to the conclusion that many want to believe that they are better in some ways than other people. One means to this end is to have some kind of special knowledge. Image credit: Pixabay / Vicki Nunn Atheists rank near the top of the uppity scale, imagining that they own science and reason. They use these to suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18). Universal common ancestor evolution is a cornerstone of atheism and of anti-creation compromisers. Those of us who believe the truth of Scripture and the reality of biblical creation science are deemed inferior. This is primarily based on their arbitrary presuppositions that science must be rooted in naturalism. However, their presuppositions and assumptions are not supported by logic or evidence . Conversely, there are professing Christians who are full of pride about their salvation...
