Some people read or watch mysteries for the challenge of solving them, but many have noted that writers withhold information. This was a budget writing method, and there were more durable (and expensive) materials. They can last a long time in the right conditions. One problem is that they are willing to accept the authority of skeptics, so they do not do their homework.
