Geoengineering, Chemtrails, and Poor Thinking

For many years, people have wanted to change the weather. Cloud seeding to coax rain out of certain kinds of clouds under precise conditions is rather well known. The materials injected are innocuous enough, and it is not exactly a large-scale program.

That is one aspect of geoengineering, and there are others forms of it that people consider using for assorted reasons. One is the manufactured hysteria of man-made global warming. Other geoengineering ideas appeal to gullible people, such as chemtrails emitted by big old jet airliners for various purposes.

You know what a contrail is, right? When a convict breaks out of prison and the police track —

"No, Cowboy Bob! Contrails are made of water as ice crystals and emitted by jet engines."

Oh, those things. Contrails have been seen for many years...my mother called them "jet streams," probably picking up that inaccurate name from other people. However, there are people with defective worldviews who believe  that chemtrails are part of a conspiracy. Which conspiracy? They get...truly bizarre. Some to control the weather, others to spray chemicals to control minds, to kill the population — there are probably several conspiracy ideas.

This is yet another area where critical thinking is useful. People who think the government is up to nefarious purposes with chemtrails probably cannot be reasoned with, but if you want to get them to think, ask questions. The first one is, "How do you know?" They should have evidence, not opinion videos or articles. I tend to reject thirdhand reports like, "A friend knew a guy who asked a pilot about them after he stepped off the plane and he didn't answer!" Sure, Skippy. If it did happen, mayhaps the pilot was going to his next assignment and was told not to waste time on conspiracy folks.

Another question to prompt thinking is, "Why?" Why would they want to control the public, or why kill them? Also worth asking is if they know how precise conditions and spraying have to be for successful chemical applications. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, people discussed chemical attacks from airplanes. They left out how difficult it is to carry it out, and the wind would blow them away anyhow. No, chemtrails are not real.

Geoengineering is interesting, and Christians have the Dominion Mandate that was given us in Genesis to subdue (not abuse) the earth. The Creator intends to be stewards and care for this planet. Part of that is to do things intelligently, with care and study as well as manual labor. Climate and atmosphere are complicated things, ans with our limited knowledge, we should not attempt to interfere with sunlight or do things that have large-scale effects.

Most often, geoengineering is an attempt at weather or climate modification by human intervention. There are various human interventions that people have been exhibiting over God’s creation for many years that can be beneficial.

For example, we alter landscapes for agricultural practices, transport water for irrigation, and extract materials from the land to be used for industry. People are commanded by God to exhibit dominion over his creation, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth’” (Genesis 1:26). Man’s exercise of dominion over God’s creation must be conducted wisely, for the glory of God as well as for the benefit of fellow image bearers.
